The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has called on the Mkushi farm block agricultural sector to scale up in participating in activities related to Labour Day.
During the Labour Day commemorations in Mkushi District, ZCTU Representative, Peter Mwale, bemoaned the low participation from workers based in the Farm Block during activities related to Labour Day celebrations.
Mr Mwale said Mkushi enjoyed a countrywide reputation of being among the leading agricultural districts, adding that the presence of workers from the farm block was expected to be dominant.
He said there was need for workers of all sectors to work closely with Government as partners to strengthen and enhance the efforts aimed towards social reform.
The union representative said occasions, such as Labour Day, served as ideal platforms for workers and Government to focus on efforts aimed at finding solutions to the problems affecting labour.
Mr Mwale pointed out that collective strength involving workers from all sectors and Government was the key to the search to find better ways of responding to labour related challenges.
He said it was, therefore, imperative for employers to accord their workers the opportunity to participate in Labour Day activities, adding that there was also need for workers to appreciate the significance of their day.
He noted that the Patriotic Front (PF) Government had shown some commitment towards bettering the plight of workers since assuming office in 2011, saying it had enacted legislation to strengthen the machinery for workers salary negotiations.
Mr Mwale added that Government deserved to be commended for introducing measures which have led to the increased minimum wage for domestic workers and vulnerable employees.
He said that in view of the promise shown by Government’s commitment, the ZCTU was appealing for the implementation of policies that could create an enabling environment for labour intensive production methods.
He said such a move would impact positively on the creation and support of local jobs as well as in building Public-Private-Partnerships (PPP).
Mr Mwale stressed that the ZCTU was eager to see affirmative action towards broad based economic empowerment policies that would benefit workers, youth, women and persons with disabilities.
He said such a vision required collective participation involving workers from all sectors and Government.
He further mentioned that in view of this, there was need for both employers and employees who are based in Mkushi Farm Block, to scale up in participating in platforms such as Labour Day.
