AU commends Zambia, Zimbabwe for UNWTO preparedness

The African Union has commended Zambia and Zimbabwe for the efforts they have put in place to host the UNWTO General Assembly in August this year.

Speaking when he received a brief on Zambia and Zimbabwe’s preparations towards the UNWTO Assembly in Addis Ababa today, AU Commission Deputy Chairperson, Erastus Mwencha, specifically commended the two countries for waiving visas for delegates coming to attend the mammoth event.

Mr Mwencha also commended the two countries for putting in place mechanisms that will make it possible for delegates from all over the world to make easy flight connections to Zambia and Zimbabwe.

He said the entire Africa was getting ready for the UNWTO General Assembly, hence the need for Zambia and Zimbabwe to work hard and ensure that they use the opportunity to promote their tourism potential during the Assembly.

Mr Mwencha also appealed to Zambia and Zimbabwe to market the UNWTO General Assembly during the AU 50th Anniversary which will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in May this year.

Speaking earlier, Zambia Tourism Deputy Minister, David Phiri, thanked the AU for supporting and encouraging Zambia and Zimbabwe to host the UNWTO General Assembly.

Mr Phiri said Zambia and Zimbabwe were pleased that he UNWTO technical agency that conducted three visits to assess the countries’ preparedness for the event had expressed satisfaction on works carried out so far in the two countries.

And Zimbabwe’s tourism Permanent Secretary, Mukahanana Sangawera, said that Zimbabwe and Zambia had worked in unity in preparing for the UNWTO General Assembly, adding that the event will boost tourism potential for the two countries.

The event is a good opportunity for Zambia and Zimbabwe to showcase their tourism potential to the entire world.

This is according to a statement released to ZANIS by First Secretary for Press at the Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia, Dorcas Chileshe.
