Deputy Minister of Health, Patrick Chikusu, has said government was committed to providing improved and quality health care services to all Zambians around the country.
Speaking today when he officiated at the 42ndgraduation ceremony for Registered Nurses, Midwives, Theatre Nurses, HIV/AIDS nurse practitioners and critical care nurses at the University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Chikusu said government was keen to ensuring that the health sector was adequately financed.
Dr. Chikusu said this has been demonstrated in the various programmes which government was putting in place.
He observed that since the introduction of the intensive care unit in provincial hospitals, Zambia has had a shortage of specialised critical care nurses trained specifically in that filed.
Dr. Chikusu has however expressed joy that the 24 nurses who graduated in critical care nursing from the Lusaka School of Nursing will to some extent ease the shortage.
He said the introduction of critical care will promote specialisation in the health profession and ultimately build capacity which will directly be translated into improved delivery of health care services.
Meanwhile, University Teaching Hospital Acting Senior Medical Superintendent Laston Chikoya said Lusaka School of Nursing has made a tremendous contribution towards the provision of the required human resource despite the various challenges it was facing.
Dr. Chikoya said the school has this year recorded a 100 per cent pass rate in general nursing, midwifery, operating theatre, HIV/AIDS nurse practitioners and 92 per cent in critical care nursing.
He said there was need for government to consider increasing funding to the University Teaching Hospital.
He noted that management at UTH was however grateful to government for responding positively to the need for teaching staff to undergo specialised training in paediatric and critical care nursing.
A total of 63 general nurses, 43 midwives, 29 theatre nurses, 29 HIV/AIDS nurse practitioners and 24 critical care nurses graduated with diplomas at the University Teaching Hospital today.
