Two Zambian students drown in Mediterranean Sea

wo Zambian students have died in Algeria after drowning in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday,3rd June 2018.

And Government says it deeply regrets the drowning of the two students.

Health Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya, who is also acting Higher Education Minister has confirmed the incident and has identified the deceased as Kelvin Musanda,19 and Innocent Kawilo Kangwa,20.

Dr Chilufya says the deceased were students on the Zambia/Algeria government scholarships.

He says Kelvin was a first-year student in Material Science while Innocent was a first-year student in Electrical engineering.

Dr Chilufya says the deceased met their fate while in the company of a Zambian community and other foreign students, based in Tlemcem,Algeria who had gone to the beach to celebrate the completion of the French language instruction by the first year students .

He says a strong windswept Kelvin and in a bid to rescue him, Innocent was also taken by the wave resulting in both students drowning.

The Minister says they were both retrieved from the sea but pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Dr Chilufya states that government through the Zambian embassy in Cairo, Egypt, responsible for Algeria is doing everything possible to repatriate the remains of the students back to Zambia.

He says government is profoundly saddened by this tragic loss of vibrant young Zambians and has requested the rest of the nation to put their families in their prayers.
