THE Livingstone High Court has slapped a three-year jail term on a 42-year-old man who attempted to kill his girlfriend by setting her house alight with petrol.
Josephat Manase Kachingwe, of house number B56 Burton township, was facing attempted murder charges before Livingstone judge-in-charge Ernest Mukulwamutiyo.
It is alleged that on April 6, last year, in Livingstone, Kachingwe wilfully and unlawfully attempted to murder Judith Mauzeni, by setting fire to the house where she was sleeping.
Kachingwe was alleged to have thrown a container of petrol on Ms Mauzeni’s house and destroyed property worth K7,280.
Handing down judgment, Mr Justice Mukulwamutiyo said he was satisfied with the evidence of the prosecution, adding that he had no doubt that Kachingwe committed the offence.
“I have considered the facts before me, and the convict is a first offender who is entitled to leniency from this court.
“I have also considered the circumstances in which the offence was committed. The accused is hereby sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour,” Mr Justice Mukulwamutiyo said.
