A COLLISION involving two trucks in Samfya District has left 36 people injured and an 11-year-old girl dead.
Another accident on the Kasama-Mporokoso Road killed three people leaving eight with injuries.
Luapula Police chief Hudson Namachila said the 36 who sustained injuries in varying degrees have been admitted to Samfya District Hospital.
Mr Namachila identified the dead as Anastasia Mumba.
He said the accident occurred on Tuesday evening, at the Samfya Secondary School junction on the Samfya-Musaila Road.
Involved were a Mitsubishi Fuso truck registration number ACH 3388 which was driven by Abel Nkanshi and a Toyota Dyna registration number ACX 5147 and driven by James Sondashi, 51.
According to road traffic police officers, the accident happened after the Fuso truck suddenly joined the road from the right.
The Fuso truck was left with a shattered windscreen, with the front part depressed, while the Dyna had its rear part depressed and windscreen shattered.
In another accident, a pedestrian was knocked down on the Samfya-Serenje Road and died on his way to hospital.
The accident also happened on Tuesday evening, about 50 kilometers south of Musaila junction.
Mr Namachila identified the deceased as Dominic Mumba, 49, of Saineti Village in Samfya.
Mr Mumba was hit by a Toyota Ipsum registration number ACZ 6883 driven by Luka Songwe, 29, of Chief Kalasa Mukoso in Samfya.
The incident occurred as the motorist was overtaking another car and in the process hit Mr Mumba who was walking on the right side of the road.
Due to the impact, he sustained head injuries and died on his way to Samfya District Hospital.
The accident on the Kasama-Mporokoso Road, 40 kilometres from Mporokoso, happened on Tuesday.
It involved a Toyota Hilux registration number ALT 9002 and a Toyota Sprinter registration number APB 479 which accounted for most of the victims.
It happened around 11:30 hours when the driver of the Hilux failed to keep to his lane and hit into the Sprinter which had seven passengers on board.
The deceased included the driver of the Sprinter identified by Police as Joseph Simwamba, Steven Kabwe and an unnamed grade two pupil from Mwita Primary School who were passengers.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda confirmed the accident in a statement in Lusaka yesterday.
“The bodies of the deceased are at Mporokoso District Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem, while the injured are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
“The driver of the Hilux is in police custody and has been charged with three counts of causing death by dangerous driving and he will appear in court soon,” Ms Chanda said.
Ms Chanda cautioned motorists against overloading and advised members of the public to shun over loaded vehicles.
