———Monze District Council has warned and given illegal squatters living in the show grounds a three months ultimatum to vacate the area failure to which they will be evicted by force will.

Monze District Council Secretary, Tryson Chunga, said in an interview with ZANIS in Monze that the eviction of squatters in the show grounds was long overdue because the area was meant for commercial activities and not residential occupation.

Mr Chunga said affected individuals in the area were strongly advised earlier to apply for residential plots elsewhere for them to construct their own houses.

He said a notice had already been served to them, adding that during the council meeting held on 25th June last year, under minute number PWDREC/64/05/12 (iii), it was resolved that illegal squatters living in show grounds be relocated in order for the council to re-plan the area for development.

However, Mr Chunga said the council was ready to work with stakeholders in the district to improve delivery of services to the public.

He said there was a lot that needed to be done in order to improve service delivery which could not be done by the council alone but with other stakeholders through concerted efforts.

Mr Chunga said Monze District Council was determined and had the potential to become a good example of a modern municipality if only some of the challenges and constraints currently being faced could be addressed.

He cited the need to be evaluated again because the previous evaluation expired in 1996 which made it difficult for the council to collect revenue through rates from new buildings that were on title.

Mr Chunga said once evaluated, the council will be able to capture a number of new buildings that are on title in order to generate funds through the rates which will be utilized for implementing various programmes and projects to improve public service delivery to the people of Monze.

He said plans to work on road signs, construct a modern market, public library to improve literacy levels and rehabilitate already-existing structures were under way.

Mr Chunga said it was only possible to achieve this kind of meaningful development through concerted efforts with other stakeholders instead of leaving the responsibility to the council alone.
