Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, together with a global rail industry leader, Bombardier Transportation, will showcase the solutions behind Zambia’s first GlobalSystem for Mobile Communication – Railway (GSM-R) infrastructure at AfricaRail 2014 from 1st – 2nd July.
n March 2014, Huawei and Bombardier were appointed as the official GSM-R provider by Zambia RailwaysLimited (ZRL) for the Chingola-Livingstone railway line. GSM-R is an international wireless communications standard for railway communication and applications. It is the main stream in railway communication, has been accepted as the standard and is widely used across the world. The system guarantees performance at speeds up to 500 km/h (310 mph), without any communication loss. Together, Huawei and Bombardier will implement the cutting-edge signaling and telecommunication technology to further improve safety and capacity of the railway line.
With over twenty years of experience in the telecommunications field, Huawei’s GSM-R product and solution portfolio enables interoperability between communication systems of railway companies and equipment vendors, ensuring highest level of service quality for conventional and high speed trains at all times. Leveraging its extensive technical expertise and experience in the transportation industry, Huawei has helped railway operators successfully deploy GSM-R systems across Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe, covering over 20,650km of railway lines. Huawei is the only vendor in the industry to offer GSM-R full-system redundancy which means that there is comprehensive back-up of critical components and functions, offering the highest reliability in the industry. Huawei’s GSM-R solution is also the only one of its kind in the Industry that supports evolution to LTE.
In March 2013, Huawei announced its partnership with the Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (PRASA) to deploy GSM-R for their commuter railways in the country. It was the first agreement signed in Sub-Sahara Africa for the deployment of a GSM-Railway. Huawei’s GSM-R system will be installed along 1200km of PRASA’s railway lines across South Africa and will enhance their safety and data transmission capacity, thus restoring public confidence in the South African railway system.
Huawei’s Global Director of Business Development Railway Solutions, Norma Frisch, and Lucien Peters, Bombardier Sales and Business Development Director for Africa will be available at stand 78 at AfricaRail 2014, to share insights on the ZRL project. AfricaRail is Africa’s leading transport and infrastructure exhibition for rail operators and major heavy haul cargo owners looking for additional efficiency and smarter operations. It will be hosted at the Sandton Covention Centre and it will be the second consecutive year that Huawei is participating in this prestigious event.
Huawei will also be organising a speaking slot, a roundtable discussion and a technical session, where Huawei industry specialists will share visions and insights on latest trends and developments. Huawei customers and partners will be welcome to share perspectives on a number of industry hot topics.
