The Ministry of Finance has disclosed that the treasury released K1 billion for investments and special projects during the first quarter of this year.
Of this amount, K140 million was released for remodeling works at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, K15 million for the recapitalisation of the Government Printing Department, K35 million for Zesco rehabilitation works, K4.5 million for the Copperbelt Environmental Programme, and K1 million for the Rural Finance Programme.
The Ministry also released K6.4 million for the Youth Skills Development Programme during the period under review.
Commenting on the release of funds for youth skills and development, Secretary to the Treasury, Fredson Yamba, said government would continue to support the young people of Zambia with practical interventions in order to tap into their budding, but latent capacities.
This is contained in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today by Ministry of Finance Public Relations Officer, Chileshe Kandeta.
Mr Kandeta also disclosed that the treasury also released K6.8 million as government support to the Millennium Challenge Account Compact, the entity responsible for implementing the USA supported water and sanitation project for Lusaka worth US$350 million.
He said a further K245 million was released to the National Road Fund Agency, being fuel levy revenue collected in the first quarter.
In addition, the Ministry of Finance released the following funds for road infrastructural rehabilitation, maintenance and upgrade;
K64 million for construction and upgrading the Isoka-Muyombe-Chama-Lundazi road and K40 million for the Pave Zambia Road Project, k40 million for the Pave Zambia Road Project, K20 million for speeding up works on the bottom road in Southern Province, and K20 million for periodic maintenance of the Ndola, Kitwe dual carriage way.
Others fund released are K20 million for upgrading 70 km of the pedicle road, K20 million for the Tetayoyo-Katunda/Lukulu Junction upgrade, K20 million the rehabilitation of the Kasama-Mporokoso road, K20 million for the upgrading of the Mbesuma-Kasama road and K20 million for the maintenance of the Kabwe-Kapiri road.
The rest of the funds released include K20 million for the maintenance of the Ndola City roads, K17 million for the upgrading of the Chipata-Mfuwe road, K10 million for the Chingola-Kitwe dual carriage way works and K15 million for Livingstone City roads.
Mr Kandeta said the funds released for Livingstone will enhance the status of the city not only as a tourist capital, but also as the cleanest town in Zambia and an international destination of choice.
And the Secretary to the Treasury said government is in the highest state of conscientiousness in management of the economy and development of the country in general.
“This is to ensure that development programmes remain on course and that through efficient monitoring and evaluation, public resource investments continue to produce results that are beneficial to the people of Zambia and reassuring to the regional and international investment community,” Mr Yamba said.
