On April 10 three teachers, one member of the Parents Council and nine students from Kilkenny CBS will travel to Zambia to promote the Zambia Immersion project called ‘The Twalabuka Project’.

This self help initiative for local people has been part financed by the CBS students for years through fund raising. The project involves the construction of six houses for teachers at the Twalabuka School.

The CBS pupils have been very active with projects in Zambia for a long time. A number of them travelled to the area to see at first hand how their money was being spent, and the difference their efforts were making to the lives of others less swell off than themselves.

Most of the school teachers in Twalabuka live miles away from the school and they have to walk there every day. During the rainy season the roads become almost impossible to navigate, and often they miss classes as a result.

This would leave the pupils a day or even more without lessons. When the Twalabuka Project is complete the teachers will be living on site and less school hours will be lost.

Solar energy

The project also include the development of solar panels. There is no electricity and a well will be drilled to help provide running water.

It is envisaged that the well and the solar panels will service the needs of both the new teacher accommodation and the school itself.

The Tipperary under-21 hurling team will play Kilkenny in St John’s Park on Sunday, February 23 (11am) to help raise funds for this project. This is the third year running that this fund-raiser has taken place, with the score at one win each.

The match precedes the top Allianz National Hurling League match between champions, Kilkenny and Tipperary in Nowlan Park (2pm).

The organisers are hoping for a good attendance for what is an attractive fixture involving two teams who could be real contenders in the upcoming championship.

The CBS Zambia Immersion Committee thanked both county team managers, T.J. Connolly of Tipperary and Brian Ryan of Kilkenny, plus the O’Loughlin Gaels clubs for their cooperation with the promotion of this event. The match referee will be Eamon Mansfield (Cloneen).

Local league dates

Meanwhile, the provision dates for the rounds of the Kilkenny senior and intermediate hurling leagues have been announced – Round 1, April 12/13; Round 2, May 9, 10 and 11; Round 3, May 16, 17 and 18; Round 4, July 11, 12 and 13; Round 5, August 16/17.
