ACTING MMD national secretary Kapembwa Simbao and his deputy Chembe Nyangu have urged the Lusaka High Court to order the immediate release of 101 motor vehicles seized from the opposition political party shortly after the 2011 general elections.
Mr Simbao and Mr Chembe yesterday told the court during cross-examination that the party was not aware that some of the vehicles were used as collateral for MMD rentals at the National Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA) building while another was sold by an MMD Member of Parliament (MP).
This is in a matter in which the MMD is challenging the seizure of 101 motor vehicles.
Mr Simbao, who is Senga Hill MP, told Judge Annie Sitali during continued trial yesterday that the seizure of the motor vehicles by the Police had created unfair operations of the party.
During their testimonies, the two officials said it was not true that the vehicles were bought using funds suspected to have been proceeds of crime, but that the former ruling party had embarked on several fundraising ventures.
Mr Simbao said it was for that reason that the MMD was demanding that the vehicles be released.
The officials, however, told the court that they were not aware that one vehicle was used as collateral for rentals at the NAPSA building.
They said they were also not aware that one vehicle was sold by an MP in February this year and that the third was still in possession of another MP.
Trial continues on November 8, this year.
