Mpongwe acting district commissioner, Joseph Mwambana, has urged all political parties participating in the forthcoming Mpongwe parliamentary by-election to maintain peace during all the period from the nominations up to election day.
Mwambana said there was no need for any political party to engage itself in any form of violence as the people involved in the elections were all but one family despite belonging to different political parties.
He has since urged all political parties to avoid hiring aliens in the area especially during this crucial time of a by-election noting that outsiders were the perpetrators of violence.
He added that local residents were usually peaceful but those that come from other places were notably the ones causing confusion.
Mwambana also said all political players were ready for the nominations today as information for the event has been relayed.
He hoped that all concerned parties will do only what was expected of them during the period.
The District Commissioner was speaking to ZANIS ahead of the nominations taking place in Mpongwe constituency today.
Mr. Mwambana, who is Masaiti District Commissioner, is in Mpongwe to stand in for his counterpart, Mr. George Nsali who is away for studies.
The Mpongwe seat fell vacant following the resignation of the then MMD parliamentarian for the area, Gabriel Namulambe, who has since joined the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) on which he has been adopted to re-contest the seat.
Five political parties are expected to participate in the parliamentary by-elections.
These are United National Independence Party (UNIP), Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), National Restoration Party (NAREP), Patriotic Front (PF) and the United Party for National Development (UPND).
There are also three local government by-elections in Kanyenda, Musofu and Luswishi Wards in Mpongwe district.
