A civic leader in Kalabo district of Western province has appealed to government to consider sending relief food to the area which is facing a critical shortage of food.
Namulilo UPND ward councilor Samuel Mutondo disclosed that last year’s floods destroyed most of the fields leaving families in the area without enough food for the year.
Mr. Mutondo said the local people are ready to engage in any form of labour in exchange for food as payment.
He said most of the families in his ward and other areas of Kalabo district were faced with abject poverty and can therefore not afford to buy maize or mealie meal.
Meanwhile Mr. Mutondo has appealed to government to construct teacher’s houses in rural parts of Kalabo district.
He lamented that most of the teachers working in the rural parts of Kalabo were sleeping in make shift houses.
The civic leader said poor accommodation for teachers has resulted in them shunning working in rural schools.
