FORMER national team midfielder Charles Musonda says his son’s invitation for the Chipolopolo’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville is not genuine.
Musonda said national team coach George Lwandamina and Football Association of Zambia officials did not consult him or Charly Jr. over the invitation.
On Friday, Lwandamina invited the Spanish side Real Betis attacking midfielder for the two Africa Cup of Nations matches.
Zambia will host the Red Devils on March 23 and four days later travel to Brazzaville for the return leg.
Musonda, who, however, has great respect for Lwandamina said this on his Facebook page.
“I always talk to Lwandamina. We have been friends since Zambia Schools [but] the call he made surprised me. I have great respect for him [Lwandamina] and I will continue to be his friend [but] I know if he really had to make a decision like that he was going to call me and talk, like we always do while I am in Ndola visiting.
“I would have known if it was serious. I am old school guy…. a spade is a spade, you can’t win a race without starting. He’s [Lwandamina] matured unlike some. He’s open-minded,” Musonda said.
Efforts to get a comment from Lwandamina proved futile.
However, according to hlnsport, journalist Kristof Terreur, Charly has rejected the call-up because he doesn’t even have a Zambian passport.
Charly is currently with Spanish side Real Betis on loan from English side Chelsea.
He has scored once at Betis and has been uninfluential in the team’s recent impressive performance.
Charly has featured for all the Belgium junior national teams and also qualifies to play for England.
Meanwhile, Musonda says he a patriotic Zambian.
“Most of you don’t understand the pride of playing for the nation, I do. Calling me unpatriotic guy is fine because you have no idea how people turned against me, for that reason alone I forgive most Zambians who talk trash, but don’t dare start talking about me again in a negative way.
“I have gone through that phase. I was part of Zambian football long time ago, did everything right until my time came abruptly and my career was over,” he said.
