Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Wamunyima Muwana has reiterated that government had a vision to mitigate adverse effects of climate change caused by the loss of forests in the country.
Speaking during a tree planting ceremony at Mwembeshi secondary school in Chilanga district yesterday, Mr. Muwana said the mismanagement of forests and trees compromises the country’s ability to meet the demand of the future generation.
Mr. Muwana has since called for sustainable use of forest resources and encouraged people to develop a culture of planting trees to replace those that are being utilised.
And Chilanga District Commissioner Edith Muwana said the area only has three secondary schools against 26 primary schools.
Mrs. Muwana said two of the three secondary schools were about 40 kilometres apart.
She said this has forced pupils to cover long distances, a situation which has contributed to the high rate of early marriages among girls.
She has however commended government for upgrading Mount Makulu primary into a secondary school.
