Govt. releases KR 12000 for Fish survey on Lake Mweru
Nchelenge, June 27th, 2013, ZANIS —- Government has released 120 thousand kwacha rebased to finance the 2013 “frame survey” on the Mweru-Luapula fishery.
And the Department of Fisheries (DoF) in Nchelenge District of Luapula province has appealed to the traditional leaders and the fishers to cooperate and make the relevant information available to the officers.
Nchelenge District Senior Fisheries Research Officer Bright Nyimbili confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS today.
Mr. Nyimbili said government has released the money in collaboration with the Programme for Luapula Rural Development (PLARD) .
He explained that the survey is an important activity conducted by the fisheries department on a fishery every five years and serves as a tool in the formulation of better strategic planning.
He said the exercise being conducted in Chienge, Nchelenge, Kawambwa, Mwansabombwe and Mwense districts in Luapula province will help in coming up with better strategies in the management of the fishery.
He disclosed that officers are already on the ground in all the five districts and urged the traditional leaders and the fishing community to avail the necessary information to his team.
He further said the activity helps the department to know the exact number of fishers, boats and fishing gears that are there and that it provides social and economic insights of the fishing industry.
