—-People of Nabwalya in Mpika district are stranded with millions of old currency Kwacha notes which they have been keeping in their homes for safety as the area has no nearby bank to deposit their money.
The community members said their money might get affected if the Central Bank will not go to their rescue by taking new Kwacha notes so that they are exchange on spot.
According to the notice from the Central Bank, the old Kwacha currency will cease to be useful on June 31, 2013 the announcement that has caused panic among the people of Nabwalya as they do not have any means of travelling from Nabwalya to Mpika Boma due to the impassable road which has made transporters to be shunning the area.
The Nabwalya community members expressed fear that they might lose millions of old currency Kwacha notes which they have been keeping in their homes since the area has no bank as the nearest banking institution is about 160kms away.
The concern came to light after Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officials presented some tips on how to differentiate between the genuine and fake new Kwacha notes as part of their sensitization campaign against selling, cultivating and smoking of cannabis and money laundering in Nabwalya yesterday.
And Drug Enforcement Commissioner, Alita Mbahwe, has reminded the people of Nabwalya that those who are involved in selling and cultivating cannabis should bear in mind that the blood of the innocent people who are being brutally murdered by criminals after abusing the drugs will haunt them because they have contributed to the killings.
The Drug Enforcement Commission is currently conducting sensitization meetings in remote areas of both Mfuwe and Kanchibiya Constituencies of Mpika District after arresting 34 people and confiscating 1.9 tonnes of dry cannabis in this year’s first quarter.
The commission has also taken advantage of the campaign to alert people especially farmers to be wary with the briefcase dealers who go to remote areas with fake money to buy farm produce at a law price making people to incur double loss of money and the crops sold.
And Communication, Transport, Works and Supply Deputy Minister, Mwimba Malama, assured the people of Nabwalya that the current government attaches great importance to ensuring that the road from Mpika to connect Eastern Province via Mambwe District will pass through Nabwalya Chiefdom so that people should have access to good road and transport.
Mr Malama, who is the Member of Parliament for Mfuwe Constituency, disclosed that about K590,361,167.00 will be spent on the road from mpika to Nabwalya, adding that the contractor has been picked and soon will start mobilizing his equipment to shift to the first site.
Speaking earlier when the entourage from the Drug Enforcement Commission paid a courtesy call on chief Nabwalya, the traditional leader called on the PF-led Government to look with passion at the people of Nabwalya by ensuring that the road is worked on before the end of five years.
Chief Nabwalya said his subjects are eager to support any development project because the area has been lagging behind in a lot of developmental activities such as lack of mobile network, government school, and health facilities which has resulted in youths to indulge in drug trafficking and abuse.
