Mansa General Hospital Medical Officer Jose Sulu has disclosed that the health institution has a shortage over 133 health workers.
Dr. Sulu disclosed that among the health workers that the hospital is short of are 98 nurses, 11 doctors, 35 administrative officers and other staffs.
She said there was need to employ more health workers if the hospital was to operate more effectively.
She noted that departments such as the pharmacy at the hospital have been operating with only one staff.
ZANIS reports that Dr. Sulu said this when Luapula Province Minister Brigadier General Benson Kapaya, Mansa District Commissioner Miriam Kauseni and Luapula Province Medical Officer Elicho Bwalya toured the hospital yesterday.
Dr. Sulu added that despite the shortage of health workers at the hospital, the available staff was working hard to provide health care which has lead to the reduction in the mortality rate in the area.
She said the hospital was happy with government efforts to improve standards of the hospital through giving the institution grants towards its operation.
And Luapula Province Minister Brigadier General Benson Kapaya said government was seriously addressing the issue of the shortage of health workers.
General Kapaya said the shortage of qualified health personnel was a country wide problem.
He said this problem has been caused by many health workers who have left the country for greener pastures.
He however said the trend was slowly changing as many more health workers have started staying in the country.
Meanwhile, Luapula Province Medical officer Elicho Bwalya observed that there was need for government to consider building a second level hospital in the province.
Dr. Bwalya said the population in the province was growing while the infrastructure has remained the same.
