Unionised workers at the Times of Zambia in Lusaka have commended government for its assurance to recapitalise the three public media houses to make them more effective.
Zambia Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Times Lusaka Chapel president, James Muyanwa said the move to recapitalize the Times of Zambia, Zambia Daily Mail and the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) will revive the morale of workers at the three institutions.
In a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Muyanwa said ZUJ is happy about the plans by government and pledged to continue working hard to ensure the move to turn around the public media, particularly Times Printpak succeeds.
During a tour of the Times Printpak head office in Ndola yesterday, Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy minister, Mwansa Kapeya’s disclosed that government had no immediate intentions to privatise the public media but would instead recapitalise them to make them more viable.
Times Printpak Limited are the publishers of the Times of Zambia and the Sunday Times of Zambia newspapers whose printing press is in Ndola.
Meanwhile, Mr. Muyanwa has expressed confidence that the current crop of government leaders will help resolve the financial misery that the Times of Zambia is currently facing.
He charged that Times of Zambia urgently needs a bail-out package of its own instead of waiting for the general support because the newspaper is in serious dire need of financial help compared to the Zambia Daily Mail and ZNBC.
