———— Chambeshi Water and Sewerage, the only water utility company in Northern Province, has been hit by a critical financial crisis hence affecting smooth service delivery to its clients.
Northern and Muchinga Provinces Company Director for Financial and Commercial services Cosmas Shawa has disclosed that the company is limping because it has no money to enable it provide the much need water services.
This came to light when Deputy Minister for Local Government and Housing John Kufuna accompanied by an Engineer for DAID Michael Museba toured Kasama yesterday.
Mr. Shawa said the company owes Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) KR700 Million and has not also paid its workers a bill amounting to KR 500 Million.
He also said the Water Utility Company owes huge sums of money to NAPSA and some of its property has since been seized by court bailiffs due to lack of capacity to pay.
Mr. Shawa appealed to government for financial support to enable the company provide the necessary service to people of Northern and Muchinga Provinces.
He explained that Nakonde water system needs a total overhauling of the system adding that Isoka, Mpulungu and Kaputa require KR 50 Million.
Mr. Shawa added that in Kasama and Mpika the company is likely to engage a Chinese company which is interested to work on the water systems.
He however saluted to government for being supportive in the improvement of water and sanitation to the company.
And Deputy Minister for Local Government and Housing John Kufuna said government stands ready to provide quality service to its citizens.
Mr. Kufuna urged Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company to expand its supply capacity to enhance its income base.
He urged the company to work hard and restore the standby pumps at Lukupa and Milima intake water stations for Kasama resident to access clean and safe drinking water.
Mr. Kufuna added that storage tanks and the filtration center should be repaired so that adequate water storage for consumers is good in Kasama.
