Govt pledges to transform youths
Mkushi, March 12, 2015, ZANIS—Government has re-affirmed its commitment of  transforming youths in Mkushi District into productive citizens in its quest to ensure sustainable national development.

Mkushi District Commissioner Luka Mwamba made the commitment when he graced the 2015 Youth Day celebrations at Mkushi Presidential Square today.

Mr. Mwamba said that the Patriotic Front Government had shown commitment in this regard through consistent efforts to incorporate all aspects of national development.

He said that to this effect, Government had continued to upscale its input towards interventions that are aimed at consolidating youth participation in crucial matters such as the economy as well as decision making.

He cited the establishment of Micro-Credit Financing facilities that specifically targeted Youths as well as the integration of youths in leadership and decision making positions saying that strides had been made in these aspects.

Mr. Mwamba stressed that Government was on course in its efforts to better the plight of Youths through other interventions such as expansion of educational facilities to absorb school leavers as well as establishment of District Vocational Training Centres.

He said that such interventions were in tandem with preparing the youths to fulfil the Theme for this year’s Youth Day : ‘The Youth Building a sustainable Future’.

He also pointed out that Government had released K1,200,000.00 to empower Youths in Central Province , saying that it was vital for Mkushi youths to take advantage of the Youth  Empowerment.

However, Mkushi Youth Coordinator Bright Mumba implored Government to consider easing what he termed as strings attached to empowerment programs such as CEEC(Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission) and Youth Empowerment Fund.

Mr. Mumba said that there was need to make the empowerments easily accessible for as many youth groups explaining that this would enable more youth enterprises to be established and strengthened.

He said that coupled with poverty and unemployment, youths  were facing challenges such as early marriages, HIV infection as well as inadequate representation in decision making positions.

He urged Government to seriously scale up efforts that are aimed at addressing the challenges faced by youths adding that sustainable development could only be assured if the plight of the young people was improved.
