ZAMBEEF Products Plc and Shoprite Zambia have partnered to support smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs by linking them to markets.
According to a statement issued by Langmead and Barker Limited, the initiative, which is under the UK-government-funded Private Enterprise Programme Zambia (PEP-Z), will link local suppliers and consumers in the country.
“Small-scale farmers and other entrepreneurs across the country will benefit from the new programme, which is building and strengthening the capacity of Zambian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the private sector to create jobs and contribute to the diversification of the economy,” the statement reads.
Commenting on the development, PEP-Z programme manager Bayo Akindeinde said the partnership between Shoprite and Zambeef Products will also enhance entrepreneurs’ capacity to supply quality products to the markets.
“Both companies are already working hand-in-hand with thousands of local suppliers. The aim now is to strengthen those market linkages further and support entrepreneurs so that they are able to supply the quality and consistency of products that is vital for these large processors and suppliers,” he said.
Zambeef Products joint chief executive officer Francis Grogan said supporting farmers is critical in accelerating food security hence the partnership between the two firms.
Shoprite Zambia general manager Charles Bota also said the retail chain remains committed to support local suppliers as demonstrated by its continued buying of locally sourced agricultural produce.
“Shoprite has a [strong] policy of buying from local Zambian suppliers wherever possible and we are keen to grow this market further. It makes business sense from our perspective,” he said.
