The Kaputa District Council has expressed worry at the low sanitation coverage in the district which stands at about 27 percent.
Kaputa District Council Secretary Patson Kapoba said the levels are alarming and call for serious efforts to address the problem.
He noted that with only a year to go before the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) there is great need for stakeholders to go into communities and give them the required skills and knowledge to address the challenge.
He called on technocrats and community sanitation champions to also undertake a massive sanitation programme to ensure that the community achieves total sanitation.
Mr. Kapoba said this when he officially opened a five days workshop on Community Led Total Sanitation at the Kaputa District Council Chamber yesterday.
He commended the United Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund (UNICEF) for facilitating the meeting to train technocrats, and community champions on total sanitation.
Mr. Kapoba said the achievement of total sanitation is a massive programme which the council cannot undertake alone but that the help of donors will go a long way in addressing the problem in communities.
He has since implored the environmental health technicians and community champions to use the knowledge in providing services to the community.
Meanwhile, Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) National Principal Coach, Moses Mutyoka has observed that it will be difficult for Zambia to reach the target of 3 million people for improved sanitation if it is not handled squarely.
Mr. Mutyoka said the programme was a collective effort of everyone including the community, traditional leaders and the elected officials.
He said there was need for team work in addressing issues of sanitation in the area.
The five – day workshop has attracted environmental health technicians, community champions, teachers, extension officers and the district water sanitation health and education teams from Kaputa and Nsama districts.
