The Malawian government has granted Zambia Railways Limited the right to use locomotives and roller stock on the Malawi railway network.
According to Malawi’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Zambia Railways Limited is expected to start moving its trains with effect from May 2, 2014.
This means that Zambia Railways is expected to operate on the Chipata-Nacala railway through Mchinji, Lilongwe, Salima, Balaka, Liwonde to Nayuchi.
The Ministry has advised Malawians especially those conducting business near the railway line and those crossing it either on foot or by car to be cautious as there will be increased activity.
And the Central East African Railways Company Limited (CEAR) which runs the Malawi Railways network has noted that the operationalization of the Chipata-Mchinji railway will benefit the economies of Zambia and Malawi.
CEAR has cautioned Malawians to take care of the railway infrastructure and avoid vandalism.
And Zambia High Commission Charge d’ Affaires Henry Ngilazi says the opening of the Chipata-Nacala railway will go a long way in increasing the volumes of trade between Zambia and Malawi.
Mr. Ngilazi said the opening up of the corridor is also expected to increase economic activity in the eastern part of Zambia.
