ZAMBEEF has scaled up the purchase of cattle from small scale farmers at a lucrative price in Sinazongwe district in southern province.
Sinazongwe district Livestock Officer Jericho Sakwanda confirmed the development in an interview in Sinazongwe yesterday.
Mr. Sakwanda said farmers in the district are able to bargain for a better price for the cattle sold to ZAMBEEF.
He noted that ZAMBEEF abattoir in Sinazongwe district has assisted the department of veterinary in disease surveillance and monitoring.
This came to light when Southern Province Livestock Production Officer Wakung’uma Mukumbuta visited animal production activities in Sinazongwe.
Mr. Sakwanda stated that ZAMBEEF is giving farmers a favourable price for their cattle as compared to other abattoirs in the area.
He was however quick to note that cattle traders from Choma, Kalomo and within the district are competing with ZAMBEEF in purchasing cattle in the area.
Mr. Sakwanda pointed out that vaccination campaigns against black leg in cattle have been carried out and further said that the district has not registered any serious cases of cattle diseases. He explained that the department of veterinary has partnered with
ZAMBEEF in the area to ensure a steadfast monitoring programme of cattle diseases in the district.
In another development small livestock farmers in the district have called on the department of veterinary to lift the movement of pigs to Lusaka from Sinazongwe.
Mr. Sakwanda said the pig farmers in the area have a ready market of pigs in Lusaka and Copperbelt hence the need to lift the movement of pigs.
