ABOUT US$220 million will be spent on completing the construction of the Chambishi Copper Smelter (CCS) in Kalulushi in the Copperbelt Province.
CCS public relations officer Daniel Mikandu said in a statement in Kitwe yesterday that the company is committed to increasing the smelter’s production capacity.
“So far, CCS has spent more than US$140 million on the project, and a total of US$220 million will be spent on completion of the project by the end of this year,” he said.
He said that the CCS has also recorded the highest production figures amongst the three smelters in Zambia.
“This was in spite of fluctuations in the grade of copper concentrates which were not always as expected,” he said.
Mr Mikandu said CCS has been able to treat large volumes of concentrates from various mines in line with Government’s intention to add value to locally produced goods and that it has also recorded significant improvements in its safety performance.
He said 1,436 employees underwent training in safety, health and environmental issues last year.
He said the company procured state-of-the-art air monitoring equipment last year to improve monitoring of the atmosphere and that independent environmental specialists were contracted to undertake systematic monitoring of streams and rivers in the vicinity with a view to ensuring that effluents do not cause harm to the environment.
And Liquid Telecommunications Limited plans to invest over US$15 million this year in fibre connectivity and infrastructure development in Zambia.
Liquid Telecommunications managing director Chabuka Kawesha said in an interview that 2,000km of fibre was laid in various business units across the country last year.
He said the use of optic fibre connectivity is the only way that Zambia will benefit from information and communication technology.
Dr Kawesha said 2014 is a promising year in that the company plans to have presence in all provincial centres to enhance high speed internet.
“Our aim is to provide high internet speed across the country by the end of 2014 and we have already started with North-Western Province and we are now touching Western Province.
“We will first concentrate on provinces that drive the country’s economy,” he said.
