Green Buffaloes coach Patrick Phiri says having Zambia captain Christopher Katongo at training is a huge motivating factor for his players.

Katongo is currently training with the Faz Super League club after recently leaving promoted Chinese club Henan Jianye.

“Obviously Chris is the most high profile player in the country and so if a player of his magnitude is coming to the club it means every player is looking forward to learning from him,” Phiri said.

“He had been to Germany, Denmark, China and South Africa so the experience he has gained is massive experience.”

Phiri said the bench was delighted to have him, especially with his former club Buffaloes which was the springboard of his international career before joining South African club Jomo Cosmos in 2004.

Katongo played for Buffaloes between 2000 and 2004 after joining them from Kalulushi Modern Stars.

The Zambia striker, who led Chipolopolo to its first Africa Cup title win in Gabon in 2012, is training with Buffaloes as he looks for another club after ending his three-year stint in China.

Katongo’s international career took him from Cosmos to Brondby in Denmark and Arminia Bielefeld in Germany before moving to Greek club Skoda Xanthi and later Henan in 2011.
