RTSA chief executive officer Zindaba Soko said at the launch of the initiative at the Lusaka Civic Centre grounds yesterday that drivers that would be found wanting after prosecution would serve weekend prison sentences.
Under the initiative, a person convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol or otherwise would be required to surrender themselves to a prescribed prison every weekend until the full sentence was served.
The pilot project would initially apply to offences committed in Lusaka and thereafter to offences countrywide.
Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Deputy Minister Panji Kaunda said that government was committed to ensuring that the project was successful.
