The 20th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) being co-hosted by Zambia and Zimbabwe has officially commenced today.
The event which is to run for a period of six days starting today the 24th to the 29th of August is being hosted in the Zambian City of Livingstone and in the Zimbabwean town of Victoria Falls under the theme “The Beat Is Here.”
About 4,000 official and non-official delegates are anticipated to participate in the general assembly.
The official opening ceremony and the welcome dinner will be held at Victoria Falls Hotel in Zimbabwe on Sunday, August 25.
On Saturday today, special events are expected to take place on the Zambian side as well as the programme and budget committee meeting in the morning.
Later in the afternoon, a Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) meeting will be held as well as the Regional Commission for Americas (CAM) and World Bank Study presentations in addition to the other special events.
The agenda will include the election of the President and Vice President of the General Assembly.
Delegates are also expected to appoint the Secretary General for the period 2014 to 2017 on the recommendation of the Executive Council.
The conference is anticipated to yield immense future benefits to the Zimbabwean and Zambian tourism sectors as well as the economies of the two countries.
UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai has already expressed confidence that the six days long 20th session of the international event will be a great success.
