THE National Water and Sanitation Council (NWSCO) has extended the suspension of Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company to December this year.
NWSCO public relations manager Rose Tembo confirmed the development yesterday.
The Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company licence was suspended in December last year for a period of six months due to failure by the water utility firm to comply with the Water Supply and Sanitation Act which mandates it to provide sustainable water supply and sanitation services.
Ms Tembo said NWASCO had extended the suspension which was supposed to come to an end last month to allow the water utility firm to put all necessary resources in place to resume its operations on a clean slate.
“We have not yet seen so much progress from the water utility. We have therefore, given them more time to organise themselves and they also need to put in place a new management that will effectively run the company,” she said.
Ms Tembo said the Chambeshi Water and Sewerage’s licence would become valid in December, this year, adding that the company was currently being run by a statutory manager.
She directed all the the utility companies in the country to adhere to the Water Supply and Sanitation Act.
She warned that NWASCO would not hesitate to revoke operating licenses for water utility firms that were abrogating the Water Supply and Sanitation Act.
Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company is the provider of water supply and sanitation services to districts in Northern and Muchinga provinces.
Its suspension was invoked under the provisions of section 21(1) of the Water Supply and Sanitation Act No. 28 of 1997.
The water utility firm is ranked the least among the 11 others in the country.
