Today 12th January 2018, 06:00 AM, Lusaka district has recorded 87 new cases (14 children & 73adults); Total under treatment 182.
Of the 182, 47 are admitted to the Cholera treatment units and 135 at Heroes Cholera Hospital. Cumulatively Lusaka has recorded 2927 cases, 2664 of whom were successfully treated and discharged as at 06:00 AM today;
The cumulative death toll in Lusaka district stands at 65 with 1 death recorded in the last 24 hrs.
A total of 3 suspected cases have been recorded in the last 24 hrs. in other districts (1 in Pemba and 2 in Senanga); Cumulative total number of cases 152 and 5 deaths have been recorded outside Lusaka District.
Countrywide – we have a cumulative total of 3077 cases and 70 deaths.
The Ministry of health has instituted a robust multisectoral response to ensure that sanitation and water issues in the trading places and communities especially in the epicenters are managed timely so we may resume business
Noting that individuals and business houses involved in trade that have been shut down are negatively affected; we are also cognizant of the fact that a high burden of disease may also have an adverse impact on a country’s productivity growth and more so its economic development.
Investment in health is not only a social investment but a significant economic investment that contributes greatly to our national development
Considering how health, productivity and economic growth are interlinked, the government has ensured that in its 7NDP, health as a determinant is being emphasised in all sectors by incorporating Health in all policy.
A multisectoral approach is being emphasised that we bring to sanity the environment in relation to water and sanitation so we address the burden of diseases related to poor water and sanitation facilities and waste management.
I am pleased to note the overwhelming response of the members of the public to receive the cholera vaccine. The Government is working with the World Health Organisation to ensure more vaccines are secured to have more people vaccinated.
To our cooperating partners, may I emphasize that a multisectoral approach using Multi-disciplinary teams is imperative in addressing the issues at hand affecting the health of our people considering all the socio and environmental determinants of health.
