School leavers targeted to beef up Midwifery

Kabompo, May 24, ZANIS ——The Patriotic Front government has embarked on training mid wives on direct entry for school leavers that have attained grade 12 in an effort to end the countrywide critical shortage of mid wives.

Kabompo District Community Medical Officer, Stephen Shajanika said that North Western province has 94 midwives against 156 health facilities with Kabompo district getting a share of nine (9) against 16 health facilities

Dr Shajanika said the 9 midwives in the district are serving only in four health facilities while the other 12 health centres have no midwives.

He said this in Kabompo yesterday when he addressed a crowd at the commemoration of the International Midwives Day with the theme, “The world needs mid wives more than ever”.

Meanwhile, officiating at the commemoration of the international mid wives day, Kabompo District Commissioner, Dennis Kanyakula commended midwives in North Western province for their outstanding counselling skills.

Mr Kanyakula said midwives counselling skills have empowered many young couples to make informed decisions about family planning.

Midwives from Solwezi, Mufumbwe, Zambezi, Chavuma and Kabompo districts this year convened in Kabompo district to commemorate the International Midwives Day.
