TWO senior MultiChoice managers have died on the spot in yet another tragic road traffic accident in Chibombo on the Great North Road.
The dead are operations manager Amos Sakazhila, 53, and finance manager Danny Kayonga, 39, while general manager Simon Bota is hospitalised with injuries.
MultiChoice public relations manager Marlon Kananda said the accident occurred on Sunday evening about 65kms away from Lusaka on the Great North Road.
And deputy police spokesperson Charity Munganga said the accident involved four vehicles and left five people injured.
“There was a truck packed by the roadside and the driver of the Pajero, a Mr William Banda, failed to keep to his lane and hit into a Honda Civic ABZ 6614 that was coming from the opposite direction. Behind the Honda Civic was a Toyota Fortuner driven by Mr Simon Bota,” she said.
Mr Bota is admitted to Lusaka Trust Hospital and Mr Kananda described his condition as stable.
The bodies of the two senior managers had not yet been moved from Liteta Hospital by press time.
In a statement released yesterday, Mr Kananda said: “It’s hard to find words that can ease the pain of a grieving heart. I have to inform you that we lost two senior managers in a fatal accident at Chibombo last evening.”
Multichoice board chairperson Amos Malupenga visited Multichoice offices in Lusaka to express his condolences to employees of the pay TV company.
Mr Malupenga, who is also Information and Broadcasting permanent secretary, was accompanied by Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) director-general Chibamba Kanyama, who is also a member of the board.ZNBC holds shares in Multichoice Zambia.
Mr Malupenga said the death of the two top managers is shocking.
“These deaths will leave an indelible gap at Multichoice. These were critical members of staff,” he said.
Mr Malupenga said government is aware of the challenges of driving on the Great North Road and that relevant wings of government are working hard to make driving safe on the road.
In February, 54 people died at Chibombo when a Postbus travelling from Ndola hit into a truck.
About two weeks ago, another 18 people died when a Lusaka-bound minibus travelling from Kabwe overturned following a tyre burst.
Last week, more than 35 people survived with injuries when a Marcopolo bus belonging to Ticklay Bus Services careered off the road and overturned.
