Nakonde embarks on campaign against child marriages

–Action AID Zambia in Nakonde district of Muchinga Province has embarked on a serious sensitization campaign on the fight against child marriages in rural areas.

This came to light during the sensitization exercise of village head persons on the same programme that took place at Chieftainess Nawaitwikas’ Palace in Nakonde district.

Nakonde district Action Aid Local Rights Programme Manager, Mulenga Kalolo, informed the participants that his organization is determined to do its best in supplementing government’s efforts in the fight against early marriages in the country.

Mr Kalolo explained that the programme is very important as it is likely to reduce the big gap between men and women in positions of national decision-making in the country once achieved.

He further observed that child marriages are another major contributing factor to the low number of women in higher decision- making positions as many young girls are being married off at a tender age at the expense of denying them the right to education in the country.

At the same event the programme facilitator’s team chairperson, Rev Brian Kalobwe, explained that his team has taken an approach of sensitizing the traditional leaders because they are the most effective tools for advocacy in most rural areas.

Mr Kalobwe has since implored people in the community to work together with Government in order to quickly reduce the scourge.
