MADISON Motor kicked off their campaign of the 2013 Annette Miller-International Polo tournament at the Lilayi Polo Grounds in Lusaka, thumping Madison Agripak in the opening game of the three-day competition.

 

Madison had a good outing, posting an emphatic 8.5-3 win past Agripak in the international division game played in five chunks, while Bankets Broncos of Zimbabwe and Madison Bonds battled to a 7-all draw.

 

Agripak were scheduled to play Bonds in an afternoon fixture, with Broncos taking on the Madison Motor team.

 

In the local division matches played, Chongwe Safaris suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Ali Boats in a game played in five chunks with Twiga beating Seedco 5-1.5 a match played in four chunks.

 

Ali Boats recovered well to beat Twiga 1.5-1 as Chongwe Safaris bounced to winning ways beating Seedco 5-1. The tournament comes to an end today.

 

And Madison General Insurance communications managing director Chabala Lumbwe said the company’s sponsorship of polo goes beyond just being a corporate social responsibility programme (CSRP) but recognition of the history behind the tournament, relationships built and the efforts made to make each tournament worthwhile.

 

“It is always an honour to be part of the Annette Miller Polo tournament. Our sponsorships of the polo tournament goes beyond it just being our corporate social responsibility programme but recognition of the history behind it,” he said.

 

Madison General has pumped in KR 60, 000 into this year’s tournament and has in the past six years spent over KR 500, 000 in hosting the tournament.

 

Corporate communications officer, Verona Mwila said Madison has sponsored the polo tournament as part of its CSRP initiative aimed at supporting minor sports in Zambia and helping to build them into sports that become recognised.

 

She explained that recently the tournament has been played in two tiers; a medium goal international section, usually with three teams competing against an invited visiting side, and the Lilayi Cup, combining the remainder of available players in the association.

 

She said Madison has in the past invited international teams from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya, while this time around, a team from Zimbabwe and the International section has been sponsored by Madison Insurance.
