The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has directed mobile phone service providers to suspend all promotions being offered to consumers on the respective networks with immediate effect.
In a statement made available to QFM News, ZICTA says this is due to the poor quality of service being offered by the mobile service providers.
It says no promotions will be approved until such a time that the regulator is satisfied with the quality of service being provided by these companies.
ZICTA has since appealed to customers who will be affected by the suspension of these promotions to bear with the regulator as this is being done for their own benefit and to protect their rights as consumers of these services.
It says this has been necessitated by the perpetual deteriorating levels of quality of service being offered by mobile phone operators.
It points out that this can be confirmed by the technical reports conducted for quarters one to three of this year which measured among others, five sets of parameters, namely Call Set Up Time, Call Drop Rate, Call Set Up Success Rate, SMS Sending Time and successful SMS ratio.
ZICTA says it has noted that there is a close relationship between the poor quality of service and the ongoing network congestion amongst the three mobile network operators, adding that this is in turn closely linked to the bonus minutes that are being offered under various market promotions.

More problems for the poor sufferer. Why is ZICTA punishing us instead of the provider? I m sure one of the network providers has milked them after they started losing business to ZAMTEL.
