Dear Editor,
We are unionised employees of lafarge and are asking if u can in your kindness publish for us the following article about what we are going through.
Lafarge Cement is a cement producing company with two business units in Ndola and Lusaka with a total of 670 employees. Lafarge Cement has upto today not paid its unionised workers their salary increament. They have refused and last week the CEO announced that they will be retrenching about 30% of its 630 employees. The old and tired minister of labor has always turned a blind eye and deaf ears to our cries.
We are appealling to the Govmnt to intervern on our behalf so that we are paid our salary increament, and also to find out hy they are prunning when they just made a profit of K270 million rebased between january and december.(though we know the ministry of labor has deaf ears). how do you retrench from a few and manageble employees when you are not even making loses? lafarge has also sold most of its shares to Holcim Cement, the company that will take over from lafarge next year. they claim to have just megged but we know how they operate. for fear of dangote cement they decided to sale its zambian business unit to Holcim. lafarge makes alot of billions in profits but pays its employees poorly.
The CEO, takes advantage of the greediness and selfishness of our own zambian managers to exploit us. Most Zambian managers are destroying zambian by proyecting the greediness of these foreign investors. you are watching all the moneys going out of zambia and you are busy talking development. How will zambia develop if with pipo getting hand to mouth salaries? strengthen labor laws and change the labor minister. Shamenda is useless, old and tired. We hope that someone in the govnmnt is listening and will act.
