THE Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) will next Sunday launch a passenger service train linking Central Province to Muchinga Province.
ZRL chief executive officer Muyenga Atanga said the rail line would provide alternative transport for the small and medium entrepreneurs who buy their merchandise from Nakonde and would help them save on the transportation costs, given the favourable train costs in Zambia.
Speaking in a speech read on his behalf by ZRL director passenger services, Mary Mulenga during the prize presentation to Kabwe Golf Club Championship winners, Professor Atanga commended Government for having granted the rail sector an opportunity to operate a passenger train from Kapiri Mposhi to Nakonde.
Prof Attanga noted that following the cancellation of the concessionaire to Railway Systems of Zambia (RSZ) Government had continued to invest in the rail line infrastructure and rolling stock.
Prof Atanga said the decision by President Michael Sata to repossess the company from RSZ remains economically progressive and must be supported by all Zambians.
Prof Atanga said the link of Central Province to Muchinga would stimulate entrepreneurship amongst Citizens to have more money in their pockets.
He further announced that ZRL has the capacity, competitive rates and adequate security for guaranteed transportation of bulk cargo to all parts of the country along the line of rail.
Prof Atanga noted that the Government was ready to take on the challenge of revamping the entire system and haul heavy cargo in the country.
He also advised truckers that ZRL was not a competitor in their day to day operations and encouraged all those in the transport sector to complement each other in servicing the market.
ZRL will be using the TAZARA track to service the Kapiri Mposhi- Nakonde market.
