Two people have died on the spot while five escaped with minor injuries in a traffic road accident that happened in Mongu District in Western Province.
The accident involving a Toyota Hilux Registration number ALL 5498 happened on April 30, 2014 around 08:30hours along the Mongu Lusaka road.
Western Province Commissioner of Police Lombe Kamukoshi confirmed the accident in an interview with ZANIS in Mongu today.
She said the accident happened after the Hilux hit into a cyclist who was going in the same direction and the driver lost control and rammed into a tree.
Ms Kamkoshi identified the deceased as Lubosi Nyambe male aged 19 of Ndondo area who was cycling and Muneku Somili male a passenger aged 40 of Kaongeti area died on the spot.
She has further noted that the driver of the car belonging to Zambia Tele- Communication (Zamtel) Bruno Mwenda of Tungi Plots residential area in Mongu aged 47 and other five passengers on board escaped the scene of accident with minor injuries.
The Police Commissioner regretted rampant traffic road accidents in the Province and has assured public safety by intensifying roads patrols and monitoring the movements of vehicles in the area.
And Deputy Provincial Police Traffic Controller Trustwell Masempela said police has opened a docket for the driver who is expected to appear in Court soon.
