THE Kitwe High Court has convicted two men for snatching a motor vehicle and stabbing the owner with a sharp instrument.
High Court Judge Isaac Kamwendo convicted Morgan Banda and William Subakanya after the State had proved its case against the duo.
Details are that on December 1, 2011, in Kitwe, while armed with an offensive weapon, the two stole a Toyota Spacio and a cell phone belonging to Patrick Kacheche valued at K28,000.
Mr Justice Kamwendo, however, reserved sentencing to today in order to establish if one of the convicts had been convicted before for a different offence.
In his testimony, Mr Kacheche said on the material day, while seated in his car outside a shop in Kalulushi, a young man approached him asking how much it would cost to hire his car to Kitwe.
Mr Kacheche told the court that when the young man got onto the vehicle, he said he needed to pick up his friend.
The court heard that the duo told Mr Kacheche that they wanted to meet a police officer who was
at Monalisa Restaurant in Kitwe.
He testified that when they reached Helen Kaunda Secondary School, the two men asked him to turn to the right but he told them that Monalisa was not in the direction they were asking him to go to.
Mr Kacheche said the duo insisted that he should turn right because the officer they were looking for had moved from Monalisa to the direction they were now asking him to turn to.
When they turned into the next road, they asked him to stop the car and one of them stabbed him with a sharp object.
The duo then threw Mr Kacheche out of the car and sped off before some ‘Good Samaritans’ rushed him to Kitwe Central Hospital after which he reported the matter to the police.
