The Rural Road Unit (RRU) in Kabompo district has suspended the 1. 3 Million Kwacha Katendwa – Kayombo road spot graveling project due to sand soils being experienced this season.
The RRU Senior Road Inspector Chilwezya Hamunjo confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS in Kabompo today.
Mr Hamunjo said that out of the 74 kilometer Katendwe-Kayombo road spot graveling project only 35 kilometer stretch has been bush cleared and 15 kilometers has been spot gravelled.
He said the works have been temporally suspended because spot graveling is done only during rainy season when the sand soils become compacted and this also reduces the cost of doing the work.
Mr Hamunjo also said the grader and bull dozer broke down two months ago as the equipment could not work in sand soils being experienced this dry season.
He however said RRU is in the process of procuring spare parts for the grader and the bull dozer and work is expected to resume in rain season.
He explained that the formation of the district feeder roads was up to the required standard of 5.5 meters wide and it is not narrow as some people are complaining about.
