RDA commences maintenance works Great North Road
The Road Development Agency (RDA) has commenced the maintenance works on the Great North Road from Kafue to Mazabuka Township.
Mazabuka District Commissioner Eugene Munyama told ZANIS in Mazabuka this morning that officials from the Road Development Agency are already in the district carrying out maintenance works that mainly involve patching up of all potholes.
Mr. Munyama disclosed that rehabilitation works on the 72 kilometers stretch from Turn- Pike to Mazabuka Township started on Wednesday adding that the project is expected to be concluded in the next three weeks.
“Yes I can confirm that officials from RDA have finally moved on site and have started patching up all potholes on the road which were causing a serious danger to the travelling motorists,” He stated.
Mr. Munyama commended government for listening to the cries of the people in the area to have the road worked on saying the move by the government to release funds to enable RDA embark on the project clearly demonstrates that the P.F is a listening government.
He has since appealed to motorists travelling to either Mazabuka or Kafue towns to drive carefully and observe the road signs that have been put on the road to avoid any possible accidents.
And works currently underway on the road have cheered many motorists in Mazabuka Township who have described the move to patch up the potholes as a step in the right direction.
Motorists talked to during the inspection of the road said the maintenance of the road which is an international route will greatly help in reducing fatal road accidents that have been experienced in the recent past.
A motorist, Brian Moonga observed that driving on the road had become dangerous due to the fact that some section of the road had a lot of big potholes that were sometimes difficult to avoid especially when driving in the night.
“I want to thank the government for its decision to patch up this road because it was becoming dangerous and posing a threat to our lives. A lot of accidents have occurred on this road leading to loss of lives and the cause was mainly drivers falling to avoid the potholes, to me this is a welcome move, “charged Moonga
Meanwhile, the local authority in the area has also started grading township roads in the area a move aimed at giving Mazabuka Township a facelift in its road network.
Council Public Relations Officer Beauty Undi disclosed in an interview with ZANIS in Mazabuka that works are currently underway in Stage 2 area where the road are being graded to bituminous standards.
She revealed that Zambia Sugar Company has also come on board to help with the road maintenance projects and is applying molasses to the graded roads to ensure they are no dust emissions.
Ms. Undi said all things being equal, the entire road network in the Township would be completed by the end of July this year.
