Stakeholders urged to assist in decent job creation

Chipata, May 9, 2013, ZANIS — International Labour Organisation (ILO) ILO Country Director Martin Clemensson says the creation of decent jobs should not be left to government alone.

And Chipata District Commissioner Kalunga Zulu reaffirmed government’s commitment to job creation especially among the vulnerable groups in society.

 

Mr. Clemenson says it was for this reason that his organization was calling for the involvement of all stakeholders such as the private sector in job creation.

ZANIS reports from Chipata in Eastern Province that Mr. Clemenson said this in a speech read for him by ILO National Project Co-ordinator of the Law growth II Nexus Namucana Musiwa yesterday.

This was during the closure of a two days workshop for Medium and Small Scale Contractors.

Mr. Clemenson  noted that the private sector has an important role to play in helping government realise its dream of creating job opportunities for Zambians.

He explained that Zambia can be better developed by Zambians themselves enhance the need for people to be proactive.

He further pledged his organisation continued support  in addressing issues of good labour laws and bridge the gap between regulated and non regulated business.

And Chipata District Commissioner Kalunga Zulu reaffirmed government’s commitment to job creation especially among the vulnerable groups in society.

Mr.Zulu added that government also considers the Medium and Small Enterprises (MSE) to be key in creating employment opportunities for the local people.

He noted that it is for this reason that government has embarked on a number of initiative that can benefit Small and Medium Scale contractors.

He cited the pending paving works, road constructions and infrastructure development countrywide as some opportunities aimed at empowering the private sector in the construction industry.

He further stated that the project by ILO will go a long way in creating an enabling environment that is conducive for decent jobs therefore developing of MSMEs.

Mr. Zulu has since called on Small and Medium Scale contractor to be creative and enhance their productivity and compete favorably with foreign contractors.

Early National Association for Medium and Small Scale Contractors Vice President Rosemary Samboko  urged government to award more contracts to women in order to empower them.
