THE Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has supplied electricity to 873,004 rural dwellers at a cost of K576.7 million since 2006.
This is under a grid extension project, aimed at providing electricity infrastructure to rural communities.
REA corporate affairs manager Justine Mukosa released this information in the authority’s report made available to the Daily Mail.
The report also shows that during the same period, REA has installed 1,648 solar home systems at a cost of K 41.5 million. The exercise has benefited approximately 69,767 people in rural communities across Zambia.
Meanwhile, Mr Mukosa has cited insufficient funding and lack of office accommodation as some of the challenges the authority faces.
REA was established by an Act of Parliament and its primary aim is to provide electricity infrastructure to the whole nation, targeting rural communities as mandated by Government.
