Luwingu man arrested for causing death of his baby niece
Luwingu, May 9, ZANIS ——– Police in Luwingu district in the Northern province have arrested a 29 – year – old man of Chaswe village in Chief Katuta area for manslaughter contrary to the laws of Zambia.
Northern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda and Luwingu district police officer in charge Mwelwa Sampa confirmed the development to Zambia News and Information Services in Luwingu today.
Ms Chikwanda said that police arrested Ellison Mwansa 29 for causing the death of a 6 days old baby following a scuffle with its mother.
She said Ellison Mwansa and his sister Suzan Chibale picked up a quarrel over K2 rebased note which her husband gave to his in-law (Elison Mwanza) to buy illicit beer the move Suzan was against.
Ms Chikwanda said as Mwansa was struggling to get his money back from his sister who delivered a baby girl 5 days ago at that time got a spear and tried to beat his sister but landed on the infant who died a few hours after the fight.
She said Mwansa missed his sister and beat the infant who sustained serious injuries and died in the early morning of yesterday.
Ms Chikwanda said Mwansa was apprehended by the community crime prevention unit (CCPU) and the matter was later reported to the police who rushed to the area and arrested the culprit.
“The child died as a result of internal injuries arising from a dispute over a K2 note, if Suzan had released the money may be the child would not have died. But I do not know what Mwansa was up to, because after accidentally beating the child he later stormed the nearby shop and got away with goods worth KR 4000, ” said Ms Chikwanda.
Ms Chikwanda said police recovered some of the goods in Mwansa’s house valued at KR 3000 which includes pockets of sweats, chiko biscuits and several other items which would be produce as evidence in the court.
And Luwingu district police officer in charge Mwelwa Sampa said Mwansa has been charged with two offences of manslaughter and breaking into a building and committing a felony therein.
Mr Sampa said Mwansa was arrested for manslaughter contrary to section 199 of chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.
“Any person who by an unlawful act or omission causes the death of another person is guilty of a felony termed “manslaughter,” Mr Sampa explained.
He said Mwansa who has since been remanded in police custody will appear in court soon.
Meanwhile the baby was buried in the village grave yard in the same area yesterday.
