THE Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) and World International Boxing Federation (WIBF) welterweight unification fight between Esther Phiri and Sandra Almeda of South Africa has been postponed to September 18.
The fight was initially set for September 12 at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
Exodus Boxing Stables finance director Jonathan Chilonda said in an interview yesterday that the fight has been pushed forward by a week to allow SuperSport to beam it live.
Chilonda said all the logistics are in place for the fight, which will be held at the same venue.
“Everything is looking positive. On the finances we are still negotiating with our main sponsors and very soon we will make some announcements,” Chilonda said.
WIBA and WIBF ordered for a rematch after the last fight on May 23 ended in a controversial technical draw in the third round when the South African sustained a deep cut above the right eye.
He has urged the corporate world to come on board and help in staging the fight.
The budget is K700,000.
WIBA has appointed Thiotheas Haikonda from Namibia as the referee.
Meanwhile, World Boxing Council (WBC) international welterweight champion Charles Maynuchi is ready to defend his title.
Manyuchi, who is tomorrow expected to leave for Venice, is scheduled to face Italian Gianluca Frezza next Saturday.
“Fighting in Italy is a blessing for me. I am not scared and I will not be intimidated in any way. I am actually very happy that I will be defending my belt away. For me to be the best, I need to fight the best. I am very ready and I can guarantee that am going to Italy to win,” he said.
And Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) director of operations Christopher Malunga said Manyuchi will get closer to challenging for the main WBC title if he beats Frezza.
“All is in place, we are more than ready for this important fight. We need to take our boxers to fight for these renowned organisations,” Malunga said.
The match will be supervised by WBC vice-president Mauro Betti while Italian Guido Cavalleri will be the referee.
Malunga named the judges as Robin Dolpiere from France, Spanish Francisco Marcoz Vazquez and Sergio Silvi from Italy.
