Chief Chiwanangala of the Bisa speaking people of Chilubi district of Northern Province has called on his Village Headmen to sensitize young men and women on the importance of using condoms to avert the spread of sexual transmitted disease which include HIV/AIDS.
Chief Chiwanangala said it was the duty of village Headmen and Women to sensitize their subjects about health related issues and not wait for the government to do so.
He said young men and women were dying early because messages of sexual related discussion are not passed on to them of because of certain traditional norms.
The Traditional Leader said the use of condoms has proved that it reduces the risk of contracting sexual transmitted diseases hence the need for more sensitisation to be conducted.
Chief Chiwanangala said it was true that it is a taboo traditionally to talk openly about sexual related issues to children but following the increasing of young men and women dying of HIV/AIDS, he is compelled to discuss sexual related issues to his subjects.
He said it is no longer a taboo to talk about sex because children aged between 10 and 18 are involved in sexual relationship and are also contracting STIs.
Chief Chiwanangala also appealed to Headmen and Women to go for Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) .
He also discourages early marriages and appealed to the parents to give chance to their children to go to school adding that schools are there to improve the living standards of the people.
