International Master Gillian Bwalya won the just ended Easter Open held at Holiday Inn in Harare from the 2 and -6 the of April.Zambia send a strong contingent of players in the mould of IM Chitumbo Mwali, I M Kelvin Chumfwa, FM Douglas Munenga and the former Zim Open winner Kennedy Katowa.
Gillian did not win the tourney on a silver plate , he lost his second game of the tournament against the in form Elisha Chimbamu in which Elisha sacrificed a Queen in one of the tournament’s best games. While on the other hand IM Kelvin Chumfwa lost to Gift Sithole in round 2 again.
The two IMs never looked back they were soon back on track and eventually Bwalya clobbered FM Douglas Munenga to stop his perfect streak. Munenga had won 5 games in a row and eventually he finished with 5,5 points after drawing against Spencer Masango who also finished with 5,5 points. Chitumbo Mwali finished second with 7 points half a point behind the winner who had 7,5 points. In third place was Elisha Chimbamu who scored 6,5 points becoming the best Zimbabwean player .
I M Chumfwa had 6 points so was Elisha Thabo of Zimbabwe and Prince Mulenga of Zambia. Byron Gurajena had 5,5 points So was Castro Sibanda. WIM Anzel Solomons of South Africa won the ladies prestige section which was also held at Holiday Inn hotel Mezzanine floor. Mukai Mahachi of Convent surprised WIM Anzel Solomons when she beat her. Constance Mbatga of Zambia was tied with Tatenda Zengeni on second position with 6,5 points. Valentine Pasipanodya was fourth with 6 points, while Colleta Wakuruwarehwa was on fifth position with 5,5 points.
Meanwhile at the Causeway Post Office there was another tourney which was held there. The open section which started a day later and Lloyd Moyo and Kudakwashe Sibanda were tied on first position with Lloyd winning it on bucholtz both scoring 8 points.
Kasparov Chess foundation Chief Executive Officer for Africa Graham Jurgen was present during the tournament official opening as he mobilised the resources for the tournament to be fide rated as well as part of prize fund. The Arbiter Clive Mpambela ran the prestige section while Elton Mhangarayi and Ivan Chivese ran the own section at Causeway. The game is becoming so popular as may players took part in this year’s event.
