The Lusaka Fast Track Court for Traffic offences has convicted over 1,000 motorists for abrogating road traffic regulations over the past three months.
Road Transport and Safety Agency Senior Manager Public Relations Mercy Mwila in a statement says a total number of 11 motorists are now serving jail sentences for committing various traffic offences.
Mrs Mwila says some sentences were custodial while others were in default of fines.
She says all motorists flouting road traffic regulations with impunity will not go unpunished as all road traffic related cases will be committed to the fast track court for prosecution.
Mrs Mwila states that over 89 percent of road traffic accidents are as a result of human error, mostly resulting from drunken drivers, dangerous driving and over speeding among others.
She says Dangerous driving still remains as one of the highest offenses recorded by the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA).
Mrs Mwila says as at 25th March 2015, 232 motorists were convicted for dangerous driving, while 127 drivers were convicted for the offence of unlicensed driving.
She adds that the Fast Track Court on traffic offence has recorded a reduction in the number of motorists charged for drinking whilst driving.
She says the first quarter of 2015 reveals that 16 motorists were charged and convicted for the offence of drinking whilst driving as compared to 40 during the same period last year, 2014.
