REMARKS BY H.E. MR. KIYOSHI KOINUMA, AMBASSADOR OF JAPAN TO THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF THE CONTRIBUTION EVENT FOR THE PROJECT OF PROTECTION AND ASSISTANCE TO REFUGEES IN ZAMBIA BY UNHCR LUSAKA, March, 2015

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my great pleasure to be here today on behalf of The Government of Japan at the Contribution Event for the Project of Protection and Assistance to Refugees in Zambia by UNHCR.

The Government of Japan provided a grant contribution of 3million US dollars in 2013 and a further 2 million US dollars in 2014 for UNHCR projects, such as the Local Integration project for Angolan and Congolese and other refugees. In the same vein, The Government of Japan has this year contributed 1.5 million US dollars towards Local Integration into the Zambian society. This contribution will be utilized for cash grants for food as well as business facilitation activities, including skill training.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Government of Japan has provided massive support to the consolidation of peace based on human security to various countries, especially Zambia. This year’s contribution is recognized as yet again an auxiliary form of support for peace consolidation.

In total, The Government of Japan will have so far contributed an amount of 6.5 million US dollars to support Local Integration of refugees into the Zambian society. In addition to that, The Government of Japan is instrumental in its involvement with the Solution Alliance in Zambia, working under the National Advisory Group. Here, members of this Group are at hand to address matters of concern raised by refugees in the various societies. In August, 2014, The Government of Japan contributed 1 million US dollars to UNHCR in order to support the activities of this group. I would like to mention that The Government of Japan is very willing to play a part in addressing some of the problems encountered by refugees in Zambia through active dialogue within the National Advisory Group.

In closing, I would like to reiterate that this contribution is funded by Japanese taxpayers. Therefore, I am of the strong conviction that the fund will be effectively utilized for its well-intended purpose.

Thank you for your kind attention.
